For Punjabis, it’s simple living, high thinking & lots of eating and Amritsar is all about cultural heritage and it’s mouth-watering street foods. When I was on an Amritsar trip, the first thing on my to-do list was visiting The Golden Temple, and the second & ultimate thing was to eat Amritsar’s special food items from all over the streets. You can go on a culinary adventure in Amritsar street as it is known for its variety of food yet maintaining its authenticity throughout these years. 

Some famous places of Amritsar are well-known for their delicious and authentic Punjabi Amritsar food, the taste of which you may not find elsewhere. Being a foodie – Kulcha, Lassi, Fish, Chicken and so many other food items were on the list. And after strolling around the Amritsar streets food tour, I shortlisted the best places to eat in Amritsar

1. Langar Ka Prasad

I have started my Amritsar trip by visiting The Golden Temple. The best time to visit is in the morning when the Guru Granth Sahib is brought to the inner sanctum. After offering my prayers in the temple, I headed to Langar. This is the largest kitchen in the world that serves free meals to 50,000 – 1 lakh people daily. Its unlimited meals are simple and satisfying that include roti, sabzi, dal, and kheer. Dal in Amritsar is generally dark brown meaning Kali Dal, it is rare to find yellow dal across Amritsar.

Also, don’t forget Kara prasad, ghee dripping sweet, that you get when you are leaving the temple. Kara prasad is considered as a blessing you get from here.

2. Amritsari Kulcha

Think Kulcha, think Amritsar!  Amritsari kulcha is among the Amritsar famous food dishes that has arisen from this city. It is a golden crispy maida bread stuffed with mashed potato, cauliflower, paneer & special spices, cooked in a tandoor and topped with a big spoon of butter on it. It is served with a bowl of chole, sweet & spicy chutney, and onion slices. If you haven’t tried this you have really missed something important.

Kulchas are found on every street of Amritsar but there are few famous places where you will find this delicious dish. The best places to eat Amritsari Kulcha are All India Famous Kulcha and Kulcha Land.

3. Chole Puri and Pinni

Chole-puri is one of the Amritsar famous food, mostly eaten as a breakfast, and the taste will be on your senses for a long time. The puris are deep-fried in ghee that gives a fluffy & crispy texture and served with delicious chole and Launji – a sweet & tangy flavored potato curry. 

To accompany chole-puri, you can go with a sweeter choice called pinni. It’s a traditional sweet made from lentils, ghee, jaggery, and dry fruits that satisfy your sweet tooth.

4. Lassi

No one can separate lassi from Punjab. So you must try special Amritsari lassi, so creamy and thick that you need a spoon to scoop it rather than to drink it. Made with churned yogurt, sugar, and lots of cream on top. You will be served a tall steel glass full of lassi after which your body and mind feel the coolness. Lassi is also available in various natural and fruit flavors. Do not miss the Lassi as it is one of the Amritsar famous food.

The best place to have lassi is everyone’s favorite and very famous – Ahuja Milk Bhandar. It is said that they use a secret ingredient, a natural essence that gives their lassi the best taste you would ever have.

5. Makki di roti and Sarson da saag

This traditional dish of Punjab is best eaten during the winter season. It is a wholesome meal consisting of Sarson da saag – made with farm-fresh mustard plant leaves with lots of ghee and Makki di roti – corn flatbread. This meal gives your body the warmth that is required during the winters of Amritsar. In today’s time, many dhabas prepare this Amritsar famous food dish in a very traditional way which gives you a proper feeling of the soil of Punjab.

The best place to eat in Amritsar for Makki di roti and Sarson da saag is Bharawan da Dhaba. Located close to the Golden Temple, since 1912, this place serves the best pure vegetarian Punjabi delights.

6. Mah ki dal

Mah ki dal is on the menu of every Dhaba and restaurant of Amritsar. This is Amritsar famous food item made from whole black gram lentils that are soaked overnight and then simmered on a slow flame & flavored with various spices to give it an authentic Punjabi taste. In some places, it is also known as Kaali dal. Mah ki dal goes very well with paratha, naan, and even rice.

The best place to eat in Amritsar for Mah ki dal is Kesar Da Dhaba. This place serves delicious, finger-licking, and authentic vegetarian Amritsari food. Their most hot-selling dish is the Mah ki Dal, which is slow-cooked in copper vessels overnight, for almost eight to 12 hours.

7. Amritsari Fish Tikka

Punjab is a land of five rivers and you can find the best-quality fresh-water fish here. Amritsari fish tikka or Amritsari Macchi is a well-known Amritsar famous food local dish. Fish that one must use for this dish is either Sole or Singara. Fish is marinated with freshly ground spices with gram flour batter and then deep-fried that gives a golden-crispy fish crust. The main ingredients of Amritsari fish are carom seeds (ajwain) and gram flour that gives it a special flavor. It is served with mint-coriander chutney. 

The best place to eat in Amritsar for Amritsari fish tikka is Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner. They squeeze a lemon and sprinkle their special chaat masala on freshly fried Amritsari fish tikka and serve with chutney & mayo.

The chicken is the signature of Punjab and so is the tandoori version. But rather than regular tandoori chicken, the ghee roast chicken is a must-try Amritsar famous food. Firstly the whole chicken is marinated in spices and then perfectly roasted in ghee that results in the juiciest chicken you could ever have.

The best place to eat in Amritsar for the ghee roast chicken is Beera Chicken House. When I visited there, I could smell their chicken being ghee roasted even before I reached that place. Though their ambiance has limited seating, the taste of ghee roast chicken is ultimate.

9. Jalebi

Jalebi is a desert in Amritsar. It is seen in almost every shop in Amritsar. It is a spiral-shaped sweet, deep-fried in desi ghee and dipped in sugar syrup. You should taste the freshly made, hot, and crispy jalebis that give a boost to your culinary adventures. Personally, Jalebi is my favorite sweet and I can eat many of these if they taste delicious. 

And I found that the famous place to eat in Amritsar for the jalebis is Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala. They served only two items – Jalebi and Gulab-jamun. Between these two, it’s hard to choose one, because their Gulab-jamun is equally tasty. But I go for Amritsar famous food – Jalebi.

10. Paratha

Paratha is an authentic Punjabi food and also a popular street-style food that can be eaten in all 3 meals of a day. It’s normally a layered flatbread of wheat flour only or stuffed with different vegetables such as potato, cauliflower, and also paneer. Any of these are extremely delicious. Smeared with a generous amount of butter or ghee, it is served with chole, curd, or very popular Mah ki dal.

Parathas the Amritsar famous food item can be best eaten at Kesar Da Dhaba. This place serves delicious, finger-licking, and authentic vegetarian Amritsari food. The highly recommended dish here is the Paratha Thali that contains 2 Lachha Parathas, Dal Makhani or Mah ki dal, Chole, Raita, and Salad.

By road, it will take around 7-8 hours to reach Amritsar from Delhi. Daily bus services are available between Ambala, Patiala, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Jammu.

The best time to visit Amritsar is between October – March because of its climatic conditions. During this time the temperature is about 10-25 degrees which is suitable for tourists for sightseeing and other festive occasions. In summer, the temperature reaches up to 40-45 degrees which is not the ideal time to visit there.

An average cost of an Amritsar trip for 3days and 2 nights will be between 10,000 – 15,000 that includes hotel stay, 3-time meal, transportation within the city, and sight-seeing. Airfare or Railway Fare will have additional costs.
